Working like a Dog or what I did last week in Fort Lauderdale

This is the view from the 8th. floor of "La Perla". It's Sunny Isle's newest luxury condo, right next door to the famous Newport Seven Seas Lounge, former home of blue eyed soul singer Wayne Cocharn and the CC Riders. We were there for some consulting to a large software firm's newly installed Video Post Production Suite. The CEO offered it to us and we certainly didn't want to turn him down. And more good news, we were successful in fixing all the bugs in the studio & record their inagrual production shoot. - Ocean front 163rd & Collins, North Miami Beach 01-16-11

Looking north, is the famous Newport Seven Seas beach with visiablity as far north as Pompano Beach. Note the Goodyear Blimp coming down for the Dolphins game later in the afternoon. It's chilly 78 degrees when I shot this, but it finally got to 82. - Ocean front 163rd & Collins, North Miami Beach 01-16-11

Comedian Steve Landesberg 1945 - 2010

Actor/comedian Steve Landesberg died yesterday of cancer. He was 65. Landesberg is best known for his portrayal of Arthur Dietrich, the Jewish intellectual detective on the ABC comedy series Barney Miller. He joined the cast in the show's second season and remained until the series concluded in 1982. Younger audiences will remember him from his role in the 2008 romantic comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall. For many years, Landesberg had a stand up comedy act. Steve and I worked together on a number of advertising projects in the late 1980's. He was easy going and fun to work with. Once he told me about his first meeting with Red Foxx at the Comedy Club in LA. He'd do a Red Foxx impersonation that was wonderful. He wasn't the type to hire a limo and never seemed to care about a rental, so I gladly drove him down to Kendall (Miami) each day to meet up with his soon to be wife. Steve was a very funny guy and I'll miss him. My condolences to his wife and family. -- Patrick G. Appleson 12-21-10

A Golf Legend, the one and only Dow Finsterwald and Event Photographer Pat Appleson at the Breakfast with Champion's, Conover, NC. (Thanks to Photographer Christle Teague for helping us capture the moment.) Dow is best known for winning the 1958 PGA Championship. Finsterwald won 11 times on the PGA Tour during his career. He was known for his superb short game. He was one of the most consistent players on the Tour in the late 1950s and early 1960s. He finished fifth or better more than 50 times in his career. Finsterwald was a close friend of Arnold Palmer, who was also one of the dominant players on the Tour during this same time period. Finsterwald played on four Ryder Cup Teams (1957, 1959, 1961, 1963) and was the non-playing captain of the 1977 team. He won the Vardon Trophy in 1957, which is awarded to the tour professional with the lowest scoring average. In 1958, he was honored with PGA Golfer of the Year. Finsterwald finished in the money in 72 consecutive tournaments – second only to Byron Nelson's 113 consecutive cuts. This record stood for many years until eclipsed by Jack Nicklaus, Hale Irwin and Tiger Woods; however, he is still 5th on the list today. In the 1962 Masters, Finsterwald and Gary Player lost one of the most epic battles in golf history, in a playoff to Arnold Palmer. (Note: A slightly younger Pat Appleson got to see Dow play in 1961 with Palmer and Player, he was 14 years old at the time.)

(Hickory, North Carolina - August 6, 2010) A lightning-fast attempt sets a world record. Magics Royal Duke, Sammy Cortino, has done it! “Synthesis”, an unprecedented fusion of Harry Houdini’s early sleight of hand work presented in the style of the mystifying stunts that later brought the illusionist international notoriety. In this challenge, the Appalachian State Broadcast major will set the world record for magically producing (manipulating) the most playing cards in 90 seconds: 300, which is 6 decks of standard playing cards stacked at 4.5”. To increase the difficulty, the illusionist will be blindfolded and manipulate cards with both hands. Sammy has trained over 60 hours for this 90-second attempt. Cortino says, “Houdini started performing sleight of hand as the ‘King of Cards’, before focusing on escapes. Officiating the attempt will be Hickory Mayor Rudy Wright. In Memoriam, Radio/TV Broadcaster, Soupy Sales, 1926 - 2009

©1987 Pat Appleson Studios, Inc.

Comedian and Television Show host Soupy Sales died (10/22/09) in a Hospice in the Bronx, New York, where he had been in declining health. He was 83. He began his career as Soupy Hines, a Radio-TV host in Cleveland. He said he left that job, for health reasons — "they got sick of me." Later, at WXYZ-TV, Detroit, John Pival, the GM changed his name to Sales, because it sounded too much like the condiments company. In Detroit, it was Soupy Sales all the way as he made his first TV kid-show in 1953. Lunch With Soupy Sales went national in 1959 and, in the early '60s, he hit it big in prime-time television. Frank Sinatra even showed up to get a pie in the face.

Soupy was born Milton Supman in Franklinton, NC near Wake Forrest University, I first bumped in to him when I was 5 in Detroit. Soupy Sales did a kiddies show and I got to see it every day before I'd do a half day in kindergarten. It had a great effect on me. I can still do White Fang on cue. In later years, Mr. Sales did 15 years on Hollywood Squares. In addition to lots of comedy club appearances he did oldies shows with me on the cruise ships in the 1980's. He's a nice gentle man & very funny. The photo above is the last time I got to work with Soupy, my condolences to his wife and family. All I can tell you is when I was five years old and saw this guy jumping around on TV, like all the parents had left the room, I had to become a Broadcaster. Even my mother would watch and laugh like crazy at all the adult jokes he'd slide in. He was better than all the others of the day, Captain Jolly, Toby David, Ricky the Clown, Sage Brush Shorty, Milkie the Clown, Marv Welsh, Miss Artist, etc. So, be a "good birdbath, take your Vitaminees and do what Soupy Sez". Thank you Soupy. Left to Right: Pat Appleson, WNCL Radio & Soupy Sales, aboard the MS Seaward, somewhere in the Caribbean - ©1988 The Pat Appleson Collection, Used by permission.

©1975 Pat Appleson Studios, Inc.

©2009 Dan Halyburton, special to the PAS Website. (Editor's Note: Mr. Halyburton a friend of Mark Stevens remembers the man in front of the microphone.) South Florida Radio Friends and others note our good friend and Veteran Radio Broadcaster MARK STEVENS (ELFENBEIN) passed away Wednesday October 14th after a short battle with Lung Cancer, he was 57 years old. Mark and I were great friends in High School and College and were a couple of Radio Geeks. Mark did a series of stints around South Florida and he and I both worked at WWOK-AM, Miami. The Radio Bug bit Mark at Miami Killian Sr High. We started a small radio station there. It wasn't on the air but operated over the schools intercom system. The first day of operation the principal yanked the plug (he didn't like our music choices) No problem, Mark and the team ran amps and speaker wires from a hidden location in a closet in the school Theatre to the PA system and we began to "broadcast" during lunch periods to the closed campus captive audience. It took two weeks to figure out it was us and they approved the effort as long as we went thru the school activities department. Mark Loved Radio and he moved north settling in Michigan. He continued in radio as a PD and Ops manager and had an ownership stake in a small radio company. He segued to a marketing position with a major Michigan beer distributor. The funeral was Friday in Lansing, Michigan. Mark was a great person and good friend with passion for everything he did. He will be missed.
